When used correctly, AI chatbots can produce text that’s indistinguishable from a human writer.

ChatGPT Turns 5.0

I’ve been experimenting with the ChatGPT chatbot since 3.0. In the early days, its boast was bigger than its bite. It appeared to have a limited number of adjectives that made their way into the text. Many things have changed since then.

Its language models are much broader. It can learn the writing style of the user, and is more grammar aware—sometimes better at catching errors than Grammarly.

As an example, a present-tense fictional story mentioned, “A man lies still.” The autocorrect and Grammarly both suggested “A man lay still.” ChatGPT 5.0 caught the error, explaining why the use of “lay” was wrong.

How Chatbots Work

ChatGPT responds to prompts. This can be a question, a list of goals, or some sample text for evaluation. The response you receive in return might be likened to a text message from a genius who has graduated from Harvard University and MIT. This genius also has the capacity to read and respond to thousands of words in seconds.

Like a chat—or text message—you respond to each other. It can convert your voice to text and read back its replies if you like. In addition to text, it may offer to generate other file formats like HTML, PDF, or images.

Chats can get very lifelike with compliments, humor, and educational insights. It can make a good writer better—if that’s the goal.

How to Write With Chatbots

The OpenAI default page with ChatGPT allows users to select a different AI engine. There are many beyond that selection. I’ll continue to reference the most popular ChatGPT for clarity.

Many people think of ChatGPT as an all-or-nothing companion. Students may hope that it can write essays for them. Realtors use it to generate property descriptions. Programmers rely on it during coding. The latest version can execute a chain of tasks.

My feeling is that the more you hand over to ChatGPT, the more you need to proofread. It makes many assumptions about what is correct that may disagree with your goals.

ChatGPT 5.0 offers what seems like an infinite number of suggestions for enhancing text, building character maps, and identifying recurring anomalies in your writing. Notice I said, “Your writing.” It frequently offers to rewrite your text, with a list of reasons why it’s better. It’s up to you to say, “No, thanks,” or choose what’s helpful. If it asks to sketch an idea, respond by submitting your own for critique.

So the suggestion of integrating ChatGPT into your workflow is to use it as a writing coach rather than a writing servant. Build at least a draft. Then ask for an evaluation.

How to Code With Chatbots

I know enough about several programming languages to maintain a website. But some coding is beyond my repertoire. No problem for ChatGPT. Tell it what you need, and it will spit out well-formatted code and help you through the debugging process.

It is helpful to know something about programming. This allows you to articulate how features can work better or even shorten the debugging process. Overall, I can say it took my ideas further than I could have accomplished on my own, for far less than it would have cost to hire a programmer.

Is AI Text Really Indistinguishable?

A writer may have many nuances and reasons for including text a certain way. The suggestion by ChatGPT can depreciate the significance of its alternative. As with coding, knowing what you want to accomplish will prevent ChatGPT from taking over your project—leaving you in control.
