A White Ghetto
BORN to middle-class parents, Karen moved between several apartments before the family settled down in a trailer park. Unlike hers, some settlements are upscale communities. She saw trailer tenants who struggled, while others earned a living from illicit trades. The walk home after school embarrassed Karen as other kids pointed and called her ‘trailer trash.’
She vowed not to let her environment drag her morals down. By studying well, she received her high school diploma. Her next aspiration was to marry a successful husband. Although Karen earned a modest salary in the food service industry, she purchased designer clothing and jewelry.
A Colorful Life
Karen made herself visible at the most popular nightclubs, concerts, and Red Carpet events. To establish a persona of envy, she showcased her artificial life of glamour and luxury on social media. Many guys tried to entangle her, but her sights were set on someone who lived in a world far removed from her own.
In time, she attracted the eye of a young heir to a modest fortune, Marcel Richardson. He lavished her with gifts and fed her meals from the finest restaurants. According to plan, he proposed, and Karen entered the life of the privileged.
As Mrs. Richardson, she could spend more than her husband would gift her. With an entourage of assistants, she began scheduling salon treatments and shopping excursions. Karen had servants, large walk-in closets, and jewelry galore. By ascending to the upper echelon of society, Karen began looking down on the underprivileged
Their union bore a beautiful daughter as a vision of innocence and promise. Beth could experience the childhood Karen never had. With nannies and tutors, she could set limitless goals.
A Dark Illusion
The easy-come-easy-go spending attitude led to heated arguments with Marcel. Unhappy with the woman he married, Marcel sought comfort in someone else’s arms.
Karen reacted with loud objections to his behavior that would not cease. When their arguments became physical, she knew reconciliation wasn’t an option. So she hired an expensive lawyer to extract as much as possible from the estate.
Unfortunately, her reckless spending led her husband to bankruptcy. So the maximum award for Karen was half of nothing.
For a short time, she could keep up pretenses, but then she had to eliminate non-essentials. This led to sleeping in her car with her child. She was a step down from her humble trailer park beginnings.
Karen tried her best to shield Beth from the agony of short-sightedness. Yet, the streets were no place to raise a child. Karen was injured more than once while protecting Beth from men with evil intent. She told her daughter the story of how Mommy rose from the ashes and will again.
Unfortunately, the promises lacked a substantive plan for achievement. The fear of leaving her little girl alone in a car prevented Karen from seeking employment. The two would battle dumpster rats behind restaurants and grocery stores for food.
A Bright Realization
When she was no longer able to instill hope in her child, Karen humbled herself and moved back into her parents’ trailer home. This time, there was a greater appreciation for having a roof over her head. With a shared child upbringing, Karen was able to get a job and contribute to the household.
Although she never again achieved the life of the privileged, she felt privileged to have a loving family. Beth learned that true wealth resides in the bonds we nurture and the lessons we impart to future generations.
