Some people recover from COVID-19 fine while others experience ongoing cognitive issues. Researchers believe they have identified an answer to this dilemma.
Managing Cognitive Decline
The pandemic that shut down the world is over. COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is something that will continue infecting people into the foreseeable future. This is one reason why scientists are studying the effects of long COVID. These are enduring post-recovery effects that include brain fog.
Some researchers now believe years of cognitive and mental health issues are the result of a viral-borne brain injury. The effects resemble 20 years of brain aging, with “less accrual and slower” cognition paired with depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, researchers note. Benedict Michael, Ph.D., identified “neuroanatomical changes to the brain.”
At this point, researchers have some clues but have yet to identify what is causing the brain injuries. The information may help clinicians to overcome the skepticism of patients’ reported symptoms. People with long COVID may benefit from treatments for brain injuries. This includes speech and occupational therapy in tandem with neuropsychiatric treatment.
