Home-Office Workaholic Dangers

Pandemic is Perfect Workaholic Environment

Working at home is convenient, but your body needs rest. Too little sleep leads to fatigue. It also impairs skin and cognitive function.

Workaholics Can’t Stop

The traditional workaholic does not leave the office to come home. Today, this industrious species thrives inside homes with remote access to colleagues and customers. Work to your heart’s content all day. Take a midday nap and work into the night.

Awaken before dawn for a toilet tinkle. Stumble over to the alluring glow of the computer to check your email. Again, you are drawn into the dawn of a new workday.

Vacations are on the back burner. Too much work to tackle. Have you become an efficient working machine or are you working yourself into an early grave?

Workaholics and those with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) feed active minds with never-ending busy work. Your body needs rest, though. This is how you rejuvenate your cells. Too little rest leads to fatigue, bad skin, poor cognitive function, and memory loss.

Signals That You’re Working Too Much

Is the normal sleep cycle skewed? Are you finding it more difficult to remember names or even why you are staring into the refrigerator?

While performing secular work, your mind can take microsleeps (mental lapses), characterized by very short periods of sleep-like electroencephalography (EEG) activity.

During sleep deprivation, experts also observe the slowing of cognitive processing independent of microsleeps. The various sleep stages help discard superfluous thoughts and consolidate important memories. Hence, sleep deprivation decreases your ability to learn.

Insufficient sleep causes the skin to look sullen. You develop puffiness around your eyes if you’re retaining water. Stress induces acne breakouts. The lack of vitamin D—which we normally get from sunlight—can make your skin dry and decrease cognition.

Working at home is convenient, yes. But your body needs rest. Too little sleep diminishes your appearance along with the ability to think clearly. Working around the clock is inversely beneficial.

If you are reading this when you should be sleeping, turn off your computer and go to bed. If you have insomnia, read a book or talk to your doctor about melatonin supplements.

Some health plans like 98point6 and Forward include 24/7 medical consultation. Your health insurance may provide a similar option.
